If not for the X on the reverse, what would you grade this coin.

Id give it an awesome for sure! But seriously I'm not very familiar with so ill take a stab at VF25-30. The obverse appears to have better detail than the reverse, a very nice coin.

The color is off . What is the line from the neck to the chin? What about the forehead? Interesting. The X ?

I have looked at the coin numerous times and can't determine if I think that line is a scratch or a flaw in the planchet. The color is actually much darker and more natural than the pictures show. I can never get the correct color when photographing copper coins. It always bothers me when looking at the coin to think about some joker 150-200 years ago carving that X on it. It is history I guess, and us coin collectors see things on coins like that all the time (counterstamps, cleaning, holes, ect..)

Dull copper is surprisingly hard to photograph. You have to underexpose it to the point of losing detail to get the color right.

This one, I believe, is S-31, characterized by the too-long fraction bar on the reverse and the die chips seen in the left field of the obverse. Among the most common varieties.

What bow, chester? The one on the wreath looks better than the ones on my shoes!

VF25 that scratch sure hurts it. Why would people do this even back then? This was when coins were truly art pieces.
