I was going to try to wait to post but apparently I have no self-control. Mark one of the big ones off my 3cn wishlist!

This one matches the others in my business strike collection and I could not be happier!

You are welcome to make a guess. It is in a PCGS holder and I agree with the grade for the most part.

It is a XF VF 35 and the difference between 35 and 40 can be close on these. The strikes seemed to be better in the 1880's IMHO, possibly because the mint became familiar with how to work with nickel.

My collection consists of business strikes from VF to XF, although I do have a couple MS examples, you know, just because. I make sure the wear is even on them and the one thing I will not skimp on for the dansco is a complete strike of the III. Additionally, I strive to get examples that have not been molested (i.e. corrosion, scratches) so this one really fits the bill. I am notorious for buying duplicates because they are good examples - I always intend to sell them later but that never seems to happen.

In my early 3cn buying career (ok, I was 8), a dealer sold me one that I really liked but something didn't seem right. I realized much later that it had been cleaned within an inch of its life and looks like it was a clay plug. I keep it to remind me about not getting too emotional during my purchases.

Who knew one person could wax so emotional over the Three Cent Nickel!

EDIT: XF should have been VF

It's pictures like that that make me want to add a 3c nickel to my want list of 1800's coins, but then I think of the others I want that I dont have either and dont add it.

Nice coin Kelly!
