I was noodling some half dollars and found something interesting: A 1998 Kennedy half with a smooth edge. There were 3 other 1998 Kennedy halves in the bag, and the reeded edges ranged from "crisp and clear" to "shallow and partially smoothed", but the smooth edge coin shows no sign at all of a reeded edge being applied. I only have a digital scale to 0.1 grams, but all 4 coins weighed about the same on my scale: 11.1 to 11.2 grams. Is this a recognized error?

Not usually an error, but something that happens with halves used in slot machines (or loose in clothes dryers) where rolling on their edge dulls down the reeds to nothing.

However, some pictures might get us to the bottom of this more properly. :-)

Sounds like a slot machine coin.

As half dollars are my favorite coin to collect, Iv been threw lots of Kennedy halves. I can say starting in 1995 lots of the halves tend to seem flatter and scratch easier.
Thats one thing I looked for when completing my Dansco set was "thicker" coins for 1995 and up.

That makes sense. I didn't know what it was about the coin that was odd, but it just felt weird, so I looked at it more closely. Thanks for solving the mystery!
