Just packed and shipped my first set of coins for NGC grading (using my free coupon from joining NGC). Two of the coins were varieties I wanted attributed on the label. And here is the mystery: For free, I can have my 1809/6 Half Cent attributed. This is a RPD variety. It isn't too hard to distinguish, based on number spacing in the date, but one really wants to confirm it by looking for the overdate under low mag. Maybe 30 seconds to attribute. However, I have to pay 12 bucks to attribute the 1828 12-star Half Cent variety. You know, perhaps the most obvious, naked-eye variety in any American coin? The one you can confirm by COUNTING THE DANG STARS? Two seconds, max, of extra grader time costs me $12 plus an extra FIVE DAYS of handling time. Sigh...

Do you know if ICCS charges for error coins? I have a 1985 PT5 Canadian cent that I might get graded.

Got to agree with the outrageous pricing on varieties by NGC and PCGS, at least ANACS is pretty fair about it, especially when I've already done the attribution, and all they have to do is check it.

ProfLiz,,,,Felt the same way.....Paid NGC for the extra anyway....Sure glad I did...Just came back 1828 12 stars...VF-25 C-2...I believe that is a rotated reverse ,, But I'm not sure...It sure looks cool on the label!! I think the 1828 12 star is a total underated coin...Help please if you can....

I don't know if you'd call them underrated - below AU, they go for a 10 grading point premium over the 13-star, and at AU and above they're worth multiples of a 13 in the same grade. At MS64 you're looking at a 5x value difference.

babysitr-
I posted a reply to your query on the classic coins forum.
But I agree with SsuperDdave - The 12-star variety may be under-celebrated (I mean, all those Morgan VAMers are going bonkers over an extra eyelash, when we 1/2c'ers get a whole missing star), but it brings a nice price premium!
