I found this quarter while going through a box the other day. At first, I simply thought it was a silver quarter covered in solder or lead maybe. But when I weighed it, it only comes up at 5.87 grams. If it is covered with extra metal, shouldn't it be heavier than a normal silver quarter?

The thing that gets me is, all of the high points that are worn down reveal what appears to be silver underneath the duller looking metal. It genuinely looks like a silver quarter covered with another metal, but the weight is off. I even compared it to all of my other silver quarters, and the are all between 6.05 and 6.3 grams.

It looks a lot like environmental damage to me,that would account for the lower weight too.

I'll see if I can post some different pictures with better angles. It definitely has extra metal on the reverse. If you look at the left side of the reverse, the area around the dents is raised above the rim.

Also the coin rings like silver, but muted by the extra metal.

If I had it in hand I could give a better guess, but my current guess is severe PMD. It looks like it's been through a lot.

Looks like its been in a fire and the reverse has melted a bit to give that look - also explains the severe oxidation
