I was doing my usual browsing for the unusual and found this 1992-D LMC with 90% of it's copper plating missing at Northeast Numismatics.

A great gift for that special someone who has "everything".

I think it's pretty cool!

It's missing BECAUSE it was removed. Semantics?

No, that is exactly how a partially plated cent should look. If the plating was removed post-mint, the zinc would not have any luster at all.

The copper plating is applied with an electrochemical plating bath, not molten metal. A planchet will receive a partial plating if part of the planchet is covered by another planchet or if the planchet has a surface contaminant such as grease. A little splash of the bath is all it takes to get a few random spots of light plating.
Rest in Peace

That's pretty interesting. I'd love to find something like that -- don't know that I'd buy it....

Why is the east side of the obverse shiny? Did it get 'almost' plated? Or react with whatever was covering the coin? Another puzzle......

The right side of the obverse shows the lustrous zinc that did not have any contact at all with the plating bath.

How is it in an almost perfectly straight line, and why does the whole reverse not have luster
