Since reading about Black beauty nickels on CCF a year ... or two ago, I have been keeping a eye out for them.

I am thinking I may have one or more. My best chance of having one is the 1955. In hand, it is the darkest of the three.

There is also a 1959 that is in a mint set, the nickel looks dark and all the other coins all look bright.

The last of the three is a 1960, not sure if it fits into the black beauty year ranges, but does look a little smokey.

If anyone has some experience with these nickels, I would like to hear your opinions.

I think my picture taking has gotten worse lately, and taking picture of a coins tone has always been hard for me to capture.... but here is what I have.

The "Black Beauty" Jefferson nickel. Also known for it's technical term for this error as "improperly annealed planchet" or "improper alloy."

Search Black Beauty on the forum and you will find may threads on them

It is nicknamed the "Black Beauty," because this extraordinary coin gets its distinctive black finish from being sintered, or left in the furnace too long during the annealing process. In 1959, some nickel planchets were baked for way too long resulting in the dust in the air to mix with the metal and turning the planchets black.

I do remember reading about them here in the past.

Is it only 1959?

I have read it occasionally happened in other years but that 1959 was the year it most commonly occurred. When I get some time, I will see if I can find some examples to help compare to the OP's coin.

In response to the OP's question, is this one: a definate maybe

Reading Whitman's book " A guide to Buffalo and Jefferson nickels" (a very good book) Q. David Bowers quotes Bernard Nagengast's book "The Nickel Analyst"

On pages 175 and 176, it states there was problems with the annealing ovens, particularly with the atmosphere in the ovens. They go on to say there were some dark nickels in the late 40's, more in 52, 53, 54. The book says 1955 was a new low with most nickels having a darkish cast.

For 1958 it says "the Philadelphia mint did such a uniformly good job in producing black nickels in 1958, that some enterprising coin dealers promoted the coins, selling them as "Black Beauties"

The book goes on to say there were some 1959 black beauties ... but less common

I have read online sites where, as coinskelly posted, that 1959 was the main year for these coins.

Most do say the nickels ranges in color from grey to charcoal black.
