Maybe its just me that feels this way but I am somewhat bothered by the fact that the pennys will be collected starting Monday to the melting pot. As a collector this just doesn't set well with me. Why not just let these little guys live out their existence till they disappear from circulation? Edited by TheForce 02/01/2013 9:37 pm

I agree, I feel very odd and unsettled that they are going to finally disappear FOREVER! But, what other choice does the mint have? If they pull them from circulation, what are they going to do with billions of pennies?
I just cringe at the thought of rare and key dates, BU coins getting melted down! I wish I was there to sort through one final time before they go

What will this do to the market? Won't this be good?

hard to say. A lot of people who dont normally care about pennies have started to hoard them and search for varieties before they are all gone. In any case, I have hit the pennies hard before they are gone and found two 2006 no p/logo mag. That tells me other people must have found some as well...meaning trends will be on the decline, or will they ?

I cringe at that also. Actually it would be kinda interesting seeing how long the penny would last in circulation now that production has stopped. I would think there would be enough to last many years. Also there is a feeling of uncertainty in population numbers of each date. Who would really know how scarce your cent could be? All the rest could have been melted down and you'd have no way to know.

When the US penny finally dies, I'm going to buy $1000 worth and stick them in the back of the garage. Then when I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll pull out a roll and sort it. I should be able to sort a roll or two a month till I'm dead or too old to care.

I feel like that I need to save the pre-1960 pennies (my children!). Also feels like a part of my family is gone. So sad.

I figured what the heck, and picked up four boxes yesterday. I've gone through about 25 rolls so far, random from each box and noticed that about 5-8% are US pennies, including one full roll. If that's repesentative of how many are in Canadian circulation, that's a lot of US coinage that's also headed for the melting pot.

I bought $115 worth of them. I found more keepers than usual, including a roll that was all Wheats (including one from 1913,) centennials, and various pre-1960 Canadian and US pennies. That was strange.

I'm sure there will be a significant amount of US cents mixed in. Not likely they would be separated. I know being in a border state with Ontario I see a lot of Canadian coins in my change. Stand to reason there would be a lot of US coins circulating in Canada.

Last night in $26 in pennies I found 3 full rolls of US cents, and various in other rolls. 9 wheats total from the box

They will never disappear. Decades of near worthlessness has them literally in millions of jars.

considering what it cost to make the pennies, plus add in what they are paying to reclaim all the outstanding pennies, then they have to refine them all.. it seems like a big waste of money to me..

Well tomorrow is the big day. I am not sad the penny has been discontinued but I am sad they they are going to be withdrawn from circulation and be melted.

I, too, have a soft spot for the penny. Picked up 10 boxes just to put away. Gave a few boxes and rolls a quick check and noticed that they are predominately copper and older pennies. Guess some folks decided to empty out the old jars. If I get the urge, I'll sort a few rolls; might find something good. I also kept my last pennies I received at the store. Going to keep those as lucky pieces. Ok, this is getting too emotional now. Time to move on and pick up a box of nickels here and there while they are still available! Love those bunnies!
