Hard to tell for sure with these photos but to me the mint mark doesn't look right nor does the date so possible China import. Can you post some better photos to get a better look?

Hee hee, I can't get anything past you Cap'n. :-)

And good eye IndianGoldEagle. :-)

It is indeed a counterfeit, but a fairly good one as far as counterfeits go.

It's the right weight, the right diameter, it's non-magnetic, it rings like silver, the date's *almost* right, but the *mint mark* is the biggest giveaway. The CC is just a smidgen too big and in the wrong place.

However, if you didn't have a reference book right in front of you, it could easily pass as genuine and 1878-cc's a pricey date.

I'll post some close-up photos later or get around to doing its profile on The Black Cabinet to show off the features that give it away.

Nope. It's a complete fabrication. A struck counterfeit that was artificially aged.

As stated, we need better photos with the coin out of the 2X2 to have a decent shot at a grade estimate. Otherwise, I'd guess VF to EF.

Counterfeits of just about anything are possible nowadays. As a point of reference, I have an 1878-CC quarter, graded AU-55 by PCGS. The mintmark on my coin is less bold than what I can see on the OP's coin and the date numerals seem slightly different in shape and position. If the OP's coin is a fake we should all know about it. Better photos please!

The date and mm on the OP's coin are diagnostically incorrect. I'm 100% sure a Chinese counterfeit example.
