Awesome coin John! I love anything CC. Don't have any gold though. What this could buy back then...ahhhhh. I'm thinking Fine'ish.

Great coin that looks 100% genuine. Might be able to squeeze low end VF out of it.

Haven't seen many double eagles this worn. I'd guess it grades VF-20. The obverse shows some faint vertical hairlines and that big dent by the eagle's head is unfortunate. Despite the defects and wear it should still be worth a premium over bullion. The Carson City mintmark always commands respect.
Hey, maybe if it were also holed, bent, and mounted in a bezel it would only be valued for its gold content!

For some reason the Carson City mint had trouble striking up double eagles. I don't think there is near as much wear as there appears to be and think this one would go XF40. Here's a PCGS AU53 for comparison: Here's a CC double eagle of a different date. This one is a PCGS VF35. Very similar to the OP's coin.

cc coins have a mystique about them, I like them myself! Don't own a $20 CC but hoping to one day!

That's a beauty. I'd love to get my hands on some cc gold one day.

Thanks for the comments. A wide range of grades here. I did pay more than bullion for it, but not much. PCGS had it graded VF details "damaged", I assume they are talking about the nick in the center of the reverse...which really isn't all that distracting in hand. I'd love to say that it was in a wild west gun fight, but the indentation looks more like that of a bb gun at worst...haha. I personally would grade it VF25-30....there is some luster remaining in the protected areas, but it might not show to well in the photos. I pulled it out of the slab to put into another 7070 gold type album page. I am thinking about putting together a gold type page of touqher mintmarks( CC, C and D)....I am sure that will keep me busy for years. I wont be buying anything high end though, as I would want to be comfortable removing it from a slab to put into the album(and also be semi-affordable). So far I have 2 Carson City Double Eagles to fill the 2 $20 gold piece slots....and they will still be neat bullion pieces if that collection never takes off.
