We had a speaker at last month's coin meeting who discussed the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) commemorative coin program. Apparently this started in the early '70s and was a massive program involving over 100 countries. One of the program goals was to raise awareness of world food supplies and famine crises. The USA never participated which is maybe why most of our members (me included) never heard of it.

I certainly don't need another coin series to collect but this seemed like an interesting niche. I took a look on ebay and located hundreds of FAO-series coins and collections. This particular piece caught my eye. It's a large coin, 35 grams of 90% silver (over 1 troy ounce ASW) and bears the legends Asentamiento Campesino and Pro Mundi Beneficio which I loosely translate as Rural Community and For the Benefit of the World. I think the hand-with-grain motif is very appealing. Apparently most FAO issues have the acronym FAO on them but not this one.

Anyway, I thought I'd share this piece. Anyone else have an interest in the FAO coins?

The FAO coin Programme started in 1968 and has unfortunately been discontinued.

Some good information about FAO coins can be found om this site

http://fao-coins.info/

although it is not as the name implies an official FAO site
