After buying several of these, seeing people on CCF ask questions about them regularly; having heard here on CCF that Wizard made these; having seen these albums pick up the nickname of "wizard" albums; etc., I thought it was time to find out their actual story.

I wrote Wizard Coin Supply and asked if they made these. Here is the reply:

Quote:
Wizard does not actually manufacture any of the products that we sell. We carry many different products for a variety of manufacturers. About the Coin Collector brand:

These albums were made in the late 1990s by a company that wanted to start a new album line. They hired a broker to help them get them produced in China. What happened next is not known to us as the two parties tell different stories. But, for one reason or another, the company did not take delivery of the product. There was some negotiated settlement that left the broker with most of the albums. The company that had them made ended up with several pallets as well. The albums sat in two warehouses for over a decade with the broker and the company each paying rent on the space where their supply of these albums was stored. A couple of years ago, the broker's kid beginning selling a few of the albums retail on ebay as well as began contacting coin supply companies to try to sell the whole lot. After a few months of back and forth negotiations (and research into the original deal and speaking to all of the involved parties), we ended up buying the entire lot from the broker and his son as well as the supply left with the company that originally wanted to launch the product. This totaled two semi truck loads! Given the circumstances, as you can image, we got a great deal on the albums. Both sellers took huge haircuts to cut their losses, stop paying warehouse rent, and get some cash during the cash flow tough recession. We picked them up in our truck making several trips back and forth. The warehouses did not have loading docks and many of the albums were in the basement. We spent countless hours carrying the albums out of the warehouse one case at time (over 50,000 cases) to our truck where we palleted them and stretch wrapped the pallets. From there they were transported the load to our warehouse and the palettes were lifted up onto racks in our warehouse. Our low price reflects that we got them cheap and that we have our warehouse now stuffed full of them. It also does reflect the fact that these albums are cheaper made than other brands (this could have been the reason the original deal never worked out and the line was never launched). However, for the price (about the price of a folder) there is no better album deal. While the $15-$20 other brand albums are better quality than these $5 albums, they are not 3X to 4X times better.
Regards,
Razi

This was an impressive, very thorough answer. So now we know.

Since these albums do not have bolts in them, allowing them to add pages, and the covers are a bit lighter (but still adequate IMO - similar to my older Whitman albums) than Dansco albums, I have a feeling this is what he means by them being "cheaper made".

And recently I recognized "Coin Collector albums" have something that I would think (for the cost) would be standard in Danscos, but is not - thumb tab indexed pages to allow easier access to the plastic slides. I already modified one of my Danscos to have these and am glad I did.

Personally I think these area a great alternative to Whitman folders for anyone. I think these, for the cost, would be great gifts for kids who are starting out.

The only thing I don't like is Wizard's shipping costs. But if a large enough order is put in, the 9.95 flat rate for orders under 50.00 is a lot easier to take.

I've had various purchases with Wizard and Razi has answered my email questions quite nicely on a couple of occasions. I have my State Quarters in the green Coin Collector album (one of only two non-Danscos I'm using) and I think it's quite fine, though when I realized I couldn't update it with a territories page, I was slightly bummed. I'm still using the album though.

Thank you for getting the full story on these albums, cause I have been one of those wondering about the full background on this!

Interesting story. Thank your for forwarding it to us.

I am getting close to introducing my son to collecting. I was going to get him some Whitman folders, but I might just get some of these albums instead.

Are these albums like Dansco's? With the coin visible on both sides? And the plastic slide out to put coins in?

Quick answer: Yes, but not quite as heavy duty - comparable to my Whitman folders.

Here is a review of them:

And I wish I could edit that list of pros and cons in that thread b/c when back when I posted it, I overlooked the fact the Danscos do not have indexed thumb tabs on their pages so the plastic slides are harder to access than the "Coin Collector" albums from Wizard.
update - thanks to jbuck for fixing this!

But there is also a link on that thread for a solution to this problem...

Can one of these be a replacement for the Dansco 7070 album?

Thanks.

No - they don't have a type set album available. Just google wizard coin supply and click their albums link - they have 20 different albums.

Thanks Earle42! I'm going to check these out for possible Christmas gifts for my children, grandchildren, and friend's children. With that many kiddos who've started to show an interest in coin collecting, I'll check out any potential deals, and I can never start Christmas shopping too early....as long as I remember where I hide the goods!

P2 Ike albums & 1 Kennedy half album came in a week or two back. I couldn't be more satisfied for the price. I'll definitely get more soon.

Vey glad this could help out members of our CCF family.

Also a good idea on Christmas gifts for the kids. I wish I had been able to get albums like this at such a good price when I was a kid. The only sad thing about al of this is that when they are gone, they are gone.

I too am glad to read all the details about those Albums. I do forsee a future problem for those that like all their Albums to look the same. It appears there is a limited amount available and once gone, no more.
And I too noticed the shipping charges that put the Album cost up to about the same as most others unless those others too have shipping costs similar.
If possible to buy a large quantity for a kid, should really be a good deal.
Remembering that a Folder has the problem of allowing someone to touch the coins. These Albums have the coins covered with a plastic slide.
Another thing is Wizard is now taking pre orders on the Red Book for a massively low price but again that shipping charge. So if ordering the Red Book and some of those Albums, really a good deal.
