I got this guy recently, I believe it is another g04 but it is a key date. Is paying 200 a good deal, fair or another mistake to learn from?

I like that coin a lot. If that is a G4 (I am lousy at grading these), numismedia has it at $252 and pcgs has it at $330. Doesn't sound bad to me!

Nice coin! Might be better than G4... good amount of horn showing but the obverse is more worn than the reverse. PCGS price guide puts G4 at $330, G6 at $345 Numismedia buyers price guide G4 is $252. Haven't checked completed auctions on ebay, Heritage, etc but I'd say you did well ETA: lol, simultyping and QuickDrawKelly beat me.

That's definitely better than G4. At least G6 and very possibly a VG coin. Nice .

Forgot to ask, do you think it is worth having it graded or just keep it in a nice holder?

The coin appears to be at least VG-8 and may make VG-10. The coin looks a too bright to be original but I am chalking it up to harsh lighting. It would be worth it get it graded if you so choose. If it grades problem free, it is a about a $250 coin. If not, they maybe more like $150-175.

I finally got around to bring it to two shops. Tale of two worlds.
The first shop I was greeted by a young kid and told its worth 10 dollars. I explained to him it was a type two at which he excused himself to get a book. Came back and with the book in fronted of him could tell they difference between the two types. He called an older gentleman who confirmed it was problem free in good condition n offered me 200. I thanked them for the time and left.
The second store was much more professional. The gentleman told me it was in vg to possible fine condition and gave it a value of 275 to 300. We talked about grading and suggested since I want to keep it for my collection and told me to keep it in the 2 x 2 n the will protect it.

From our CCF US Coin Facts (on the left Navigation Bar): Quote: Buffalo Nickel General Grading Standards
G4 Good - Legends and date readable. Horn worn off.
VG8 Very Good - Half horn shows.
F12 Fine - Three-quarters of horn shows. Obverse rim intact.
VF20 Very Fine - Full horn shows. Indian's cheekbone worn smooth.
EF40 Extremely Fine - Full horn. Slight wear on Indian's hair ribbon.
AU50 About Uncirculated - Traces of light wear on only the high points of the design. Half of mint luster is present.
MS60 Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
MS63 Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Light blemishes. I can see approximately 1/2 of the horn so, IMO, using the above guidelines, this coin should be graded at VG-8. My RedBook (2012) lists this as a $400 coin. Nice!

Thanks.
I was just posting because I couldnt believe how the first shop was ran. It shouldnt be listed as a coin shop but a pawn shop. The older guy should have been ashamed that the kid had no idea. He didnt even know the difference between type 1 n 2 even with the book in front of him

Based on the horn, it appears to be VG. On a VG Buffalo nickel, I would expect the word "liberty" to be much clearer.
