(From an e-mail sent via RCM) The reverse (tails side) design of the penny was created in 1937 by British artist George Kruger-Gray. He called it "Maple leaves on a twig" which was an artwork never intended to represent any specific maple or tree species. Anything contrary to that effect that you may heard is speculation with no basis in fact.
(I still like to think it is a maple leaf on the penny)
