I store my coins in 2x2 cardboard holders which I staple together and display in plastic pages. My question is, does it REALLY matter if I use my trusty Swingline stapler rather than a stapler that staples flat? Regular staples might cause indentations on the plastic pages but I never had any problems with coins getting damaged using them.

I wish I had a flat one. It's a pain sometimes when the staples catch the pages if I pull my 2x2's out of the pages and sometimes you have to press the staples down flatter cause of that reason. IMO

Generally for me once their in the page then they stay put. Don't usually pull them out.

I don't particularly like the stapled 2x2's but since I have them already (I refuse to buy the 'flat' staples). What I do is flatten the staples carefully with pliers which helps me and it's easier to pull out from the pages without any problems.

I won an amazing auction of around 1000 2x2's and I got tired of using pliers after about 200.

The regular stapler works just fine, IF you use a pair of needle nosed pliers to flatten the staples. A fresh staple scratch on a 150 year old coin is a terrible sight.

AuldFartte, a needle nosed plier is what I use and haven't had any accidents. I'm very careful.

I also flatten the staples with needle nose pliers ,, its not really that big of a problem a couple of coins at a time ,, but I can see where to catch up it may become a little bit of a pain .

If I were going to long term stroage in 2X2's and albums ,, I would probably use the adhesive 2X2's !

I have a pair of old lineman pliers that have a wide head and flat face (instead of the grip type now used)that I use, you can flatten both ends of the staple at one time and it doesn't mark the 2x2.

Has anyone actually had coin damage due to regular staples? I have used them for years with no problems. Sometimes the plastic page might have an indentation but thats about it.

I have seen damage from stapled 2X2's when removing a coin from them ,, I have however never had it happen to me since I dont pull the 2X2 apart to remove coins ,,I break the mylar and remove the coin through the window .

for lower grade coins or mailing coins ,,2X2's work fine ,, I keep all of my other coins in airtites .

If you just keep the 2 X 2's in vinyl pages it isn't a problem. where coin get damaged from the staples (other than in removing the coin improperly) is from when they are stored in 2 X 2 BOXES and get pressed up against each other, or packed in too tightly, or damage the coins as they are removed from the box and they slide past the staples on the other coins.

Another way to avoid damage from staples is to use a FLAT CINCH STAPLER
they cost a little more but are worth it.
