Hi Everyone,
as I'm becoming a more serious coin collector, I'm discovering there are many tools I need. A magnifier is my next investment. I'm wondering if you guys can tell me which type of magnifier is the most suitable for coins. The following types are what I'm considering. I'm open to other suggestions but not very into the Sherlocke Holmes type though. I want something a tad smaller

Get the 1st and 3rd one you have listed. They will both be useful. Also you may want to get a smaller hand magnifier because you will find that handy as well. I have a 35x German made that wasn't expensive and I bought that off of ebay. Also you may want to invest in a small lamp with a ceramic socket and a 60 watt halogen blub to use in examining your coins. That will really be helpful to you as well. White cotton gloves available at drug stores and some decent tongs that will hold you coins firmly to let you examine them. Will also be helpful for you. Good Luck in your collecting.

I don't like any of those. I recommend a Hastings triplet jewelers loupe at least 10x but not higher then 15x.And a good light source.

I have a light house magnifying glass but I discovered a better and inexpensive item to carry around when I am at coins shows and visiting shops: reading glasses of three times power. They come in a small case and do an admirable job.

Another option I've been using along with my 7x Bausch & Lomb APO triplet loupe and USB microscope is a slide loupe - a big quality one for 6x7 film. I wouldn't carry this around at a show, but sitting at the desk at home it sure is comfortable to use.

That is about 5" tall and 5" wide it's pretty large and has a comfortable viewing window, easy on the eyes as I get older, LOL! It is sitting on a lightbox that is 4" x 5" for size comparison.

I have a loupe similar to your first link and it works great for very fine inspection. I actually got my magnifying glass at Walmart for $1 in the office supply area.

I was at my local Harbor Freight recently and noticed they have LOTS of different magnifying glasses & loupes in stock. Prices are cheap.

I suggest going to places like Walmart, School supply section, buy a variety of different ones. Same as possibly a nearby flea market. Get as many as possible since those are usually only a dollar or so. Then make up your own mind as to what you need before spending a lot of high quality and expensive ones that may end up on a shelf.
