I just purchased my first album, the 7070. I want to avoid scratching and damaging the coins, especially, slide marks. Is there a trick to putting them in? I'm sure it's not rocket science but just thought I'd check for tips before starting to fill it. Thanks in advance.

I make sure the surface of the coin is below the surface of the page. When pushed in, the slide will not make contact the coin.

Try to avoid pushing in too far if you do not want the coin touching the back slide. Easy to accomplish with smaller coins, but almost unavoidable with the thicker ones; half dollars and especially dollars.

OK, question #2: as I started to fill in the coins, I noticed a few fit too loosely and sometimes just fall through the hole. I thought I could shim the coins in there but I am at a loss on how to go about doing that. Has anyone else had this problem and how did they shim the coins in the hole? Any ideas?

Not sure what you mean by fall through the hole - the back slide should stop the coin. To keep them from rotating, I cut small strips of thin cardboard and use them as shims around the side of the coin to hold it in place. You can see examples if you look at my Large Cents in my album linked below. Use a good quality acid free or archival quality cardboard so you don't tone your coins by accident.

Thanks. The back slide did stop the coin but it was pretty loose and would rotate and rattle around. It happened for a couple silver dollars. It looks like you had to shim a few coins as well and the strips of cardboard is a good idea that I'll try. Thanks again.

One of the many reason I use Whitman. Here is an idea I use for Dansco Albums. Note that in order to get the slides out, you have to press on one and push to the right. If a coin is in that slot under where you press, not good. I take a small scissors and cut a slot at the end of each row that leaves a piece of the slide available for grabbing. Sort of like making what Whitman amd many others use.
Another thing I found to stop a coin from moving is to find a piece of safe plastic, cut it to the size of the coin, put in with the coin to make it fit tighter. Pending on the thickness of the plastic, might need two per coin. Place them in first so it doesn't make the obverse look wavy.
Rest in Peace

Thanks jgfindring. This looks like what I need. Would you happen to have a link to what you ordered? It looks perfect and there are several different types out there.
