I understand that in some US coins , mainly pennies , there is a Near AM and a Far AM . My question would be , does this happen in all years ? My reason for asking is I have come across in two rolls 1962 D and 1962 bu rolls some coins which seem to have closer AM than in others . Unfortunatly I don`t have any photos at this time to show . Will post some when I can . Any information would be appreciated . Thanks Gramps . *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Only certain years are errors.. They used proof dies and struck circulation strikes with them, or vice versa for the s's. Other years are random (I think), and after 1993 all circulation strikes are Close AM's, so the wides are the rare ones made with proof dies, and again a few years the proofs were struck with circulation strike dies which would be the S Close AM's. The only years for rare/mistakes would be: 1992 Close AM1992d Close AM1996 Wide AM1998 Wide AM1998s Close AM1999 Wide AM1999s Close AMAnd 2000 Wide AM1999 Wide AM is by far the rarest... Followed by the 99s Close AM. Here's a wide 2000 AM.. I just found my first a few months or so ago, the scratches and fingerprints are on the 2x2)

There is no such thing as a 1996 Wide AM ( WAM). The report of one being found was bogus. No such coin has ever been authenticated.

Quote:There is no such thing as a 1996 Wide AM ( WAM). Isn't there one claimed to have been found by a well known collector, but not verified? Also, I thought l993 was a WAM year as well. It was the change over year from wide to Close AM's.

Welcome aboard,Gramps! It's good to hear from someone who is interested in the "Wide A.M. varieties. These are underrated in my book.As mentioned, the Wide A.M. varieties are fun, as well as,profitable.Esp.the 1999p Wide A.M.cent.Years ago,I found an 1999p WAM. on the sidewalk.I sent it in to NGC and it came back a 64RB.I was very pleased to say the least.Something that cost me a total of $30.01,in return I received a slab coin that was now worth over $200.00! Sadly,I sold it about a year ago at a show, for $200.Still happy though.Keep on hunting for these little treasures.I'm sure you too will be pleased when you hunt one down. -joey

Back to the OP question...your 62's will show varying distance between the A and the M do to die polishing. There was no AM variety for 1962, in fact the used only one reverse design from 1959 to 1968. The first change was in 1969.

Seal Curious, what was the change in 69 ? Was it still a type two reverse (before 69) or another ? I only knew of two types. Type 1 and type 2 WAM's being the type 2. Font size/position/shape etc. ?
