Hello,

going through a few $50 & $100 notes and found alot of general prefix notes from 1996 in both denominations. Just curious are they still in heavy circulation? As I have 6 x $50 and 15 x $100. As these are the older type polymer notes, are they worth keeping hold of or should they be let back into circulation?

Although I have no reference to truthful statistics on the average length of time a polymer note of a particular denomination stays in circulation,
it seems to me that a $100 polymer note could easily remain in active and continuous circulation for as much as ten years.

Depends on their condition. I think you'd do well to find near UNC 1996 $50 notes now, but finding an UNC 1996 $100 wouldn't be that hard.
I think I read that there are estimates our $100 notes would last 75 years.

$50 and $100 from the 90s are still common in circulation so I don't think it would be worthwhile hanging onto general prefixes.

Just keep a lookout for first and last prefixes.

Cheers, that is what I thought. But I found a website that valued them quite high. So I thought I'd ask.
No harm no foul :-)

CamMac.

Some of the 1996 $100 notes might be worth significantly mor than face value if they are in good condition.

These are the "test" notes that were released specially.

They will have prefixes rangong from AN96 to AN96, BN96 to BZ96 and CN96 to CS96 and especially AN96 and CS96 which are the first and last prefixes of the test notes.

Also AA96 and JK96 prefixes will attrcat a premium as they are the first and last prefixes of the general circulation notes.

It all comes down to the condition of the notes.

With the $50 notes AA96 and DA96 will attract a premium, being first and last prefixes. In fact the DA96 is quite valuable, due to only 620,000 instead of the normal 1,000,000 being produced.

Cheers
