The E in one looks strange. Not sure if it's a striking error or something else. Unfortunately, I can't find the obverse picture for the dollar.

Perhaps a die chip or PMD. Your pictures are coming across as slightly bleached out.

Looks like a bad hit to me, is all. The serif of the E looks like it was given a good knock on a downward angle.

Me too! It almost looks like the hit that took the "E" and bent the top crossbar also went into the eagles tail feathers as well. I think PMD or just another dollar hitting it coming down the ejection chute and into the canvas bags they were stored and shipped in.
