Just won this coin a couple of weeks ago on ebay. I really enjoy filled dies and struck through foreign objects on older US coins. This 1864LM Two Cent Piece looks to have had either grease or a scrap of fabric or wood filling the 1 in the date. There is a trace of the 1 at a distance, under magnification no tooling marks, just a slightly uneven (bumpy) surface where it should be. I also have one with no date, all digits are completely filled in, photo to come of that one soon. I'm also attempting to collect one each, with every single letter missing in CENTS on the reverse I have C, S and the entire word missing so far. I just noticed, this one is slightly misaligned dies by a few percent. "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. Feldman - "And read it" - Me 2013! just guessing: Grease Filled Die. If it was struck through, wouldn't the denticles show problems too

Almost certainly a Greaser; it'd be some kind of coincidence for a strikethrough to be able to be forced into just the "1". Even something as soft as fabric or wood should be visible into the surrounding fields. I'm loving what you're doing here, westcoin.

Thanks SsuperDdave - I do love my 2¢ pieces! Wish I could afford to collect the "big" errors and varities, but alas, I only have photos of the super ones I don't own, but come across. Stuff like off center, double struck, large clips, capped dies, brockerages, etc. When available those errors are in the tens of thousands of dollars today. I'll do a photo thread on them, I know we've seen some members amazing off center IHC's at CCF in the past, I'd love to see more photos of cool and unusual errors from the 1800's from other CCF members too! P.S. These are my first shots with the bellows and Schnider-Compon 50mm lens and a Canon 5DmkII, (I've had for months now). I just wish I had a copy stand with a better macro focus rail at hand! (more to come in the camera thread).

Thanks, they are pretty tough to find, so I will need lots of luck for sure. Here is an auction that just ended, coin went for too much money IMO. [eBayItem]330866670459[/eBayItem] but still I'd have loved to own this coin for about half that price.
