To my untutored and inexperienced eye, these quarters both look BU, but what is the numeric grade, please ?

These aren't rare however I want to learn about grading mint state coins before I venture into more expensive territory.

Scans are so difficult to grade off of.

Well, they are not BU for sure. I am not sure how to really grade these though. I do have a book but I'm kind of not next to it.... I'll grab my book and check.

If the size was bigger it would really help.

Well, I checked and from my point of view with these small pictures I grade the one on the right VF-20
The one on the left VF-35.

You grade them by wear on the hair and eagle.

These are not Mint State coins. If you want to learn grading try Photograde, either by book or online. I put these coins at about VF30 at the most with the left one even less. They are nowhere even close to MS (Mint State) but this Forum is a great place to learn about those things. Don't be afraid to ask questions here. Try this to connect to photograde online.

Just my opinions

Look maybe XF to me. Hard to tell with scans because any luster (if present at all) is hidden without a camera pic.

Thanks to all of you, particularly the photograde site.

My friend is about to buy a new camera and I'll get him to take better pics.
