We found this old coin in the basement and it was almost pitch BLACK. Not knowing any better, my husband decided to give it a little elbow grease (nothing too abrasive, just paper towel/cleaning solution and then a polishing cloth once dry) I think it looks 100% better than it did and it's not super shiny or gaudy like some polished coins either... but of course now I learn it's "improperly cleaned" and almost worthless. So should I even bother putting this thing on ebay now? If I did how would I grade it and what should I ask for?

Honestly I think it looks really nice in person. The pics make it look so much worse than it is. Anyway I was going to pay to have it graded but now I'm worried it will have that dreaded "improperly cleaned" stamp. So what do you guys think?

Most of the pics are with flash.

Welcome to CCF nixxig. Sounds like you have some sound background information on improper cleaning and understand what was done would hurt the coin's value. You are correct.

Don't do it again. The good news is you have a common date Morgan with with XF (Extremely Fine) detail remaining. If this coin were problem-free (no cleaning, damage, etc) it would be worth about $35. With the cleaning it's still is worth $30.

It would not have been worth the cost of grading fees regardless of condition. It is worth putting on ebay or taking to a local coin dealer to sell. There is about $23 in silver value alone and pre-1921 Morgans always bring more than melt value.

Hope this helps you out a bit.
