I guess. PCGS has changed so much in the last three years. The whole "Genuine not gradable" thing turned me off and I'm assuming, a lot of people. Maybe that's why they are doing this.

PCGS has recently begun providing "Details" grades to genuine coins that have one or more problems that keep the coin from being graded. They are following other TPGs.

The problem with this particular coin (based on the "98" in its coin number) is that some of the coin's metal has been moved - mostly via the "bump" noted in the auction's description.

Without this metal movement, PCGS believes the coin would have graded Poor or Fair.

I think the unusual aspect of this slab is the "split-grade" notation. ANACS used to provide separate grades for the two sides of a coin which recognized the fact that sometimes one side would show a different level of wear. Barber coins are one type that comes to mind, for which the reverse often shows Good detail while the obverse might be closer to Fine.

If this is a split grade I think they got it wrong. The obverse is stronger so it should get the higher grade and with a split grade the obverse comes first. So, it should have been graded "Fair/Poor".

exactly. I've seen poor details-damaged and fair details-damaged, but, I've never seen poor/fair. I was thinking they mean the overall coin grade is poor/fair, but, maybe you're right. obverse/reverse grade. Does anyone know for sure?
