looks like it was hit with a small hammer or something to squish those letters. See how the T in UNITED on the reverse shows damage too.
DD would have two distinct letters. My money is on PMD

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know if that explains what happened.

As I look at both sides with a 100X lens it seems that there is a equal concave dip around the perimeter of the border letters. (See "LIBERTY" above and the letters effected in "IN GOD WE TRUST" IN, TR) around the full coin. if it was a hammer there wouldn't there be a more more of a sharp gouge. It seems to be both sides on the perimeter. Why would it be on both sides in the same position? Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Damage from a counting/wrapping machine or a coin operated machine such as a Gumball Machine.PMD.
