Since you brought up the question, you are having doubts about your purchase. I am not going to say whether you did or did not, but rather ask this question; do you think that you paid too much?

I will give you a personal situation; there are values set for most coins, these are opinions based upon supply and demand. These values vary greatly among those who publish them. I am about to put some money down on a variety coin which has not set value other than what others have paid for it historically. I have looked up values for coins on PCGS and NGC on potential purchases to find out that their values are significantly lower than what the seller wants for it. People will pay for variety, tone, strike quality, defects (die cracks, laminations, clipped planchets, etc...) and just about anything that makes their coin "theirs".

Your Half Dime has some "issues" and if you are basing your purchase on sheer bullion value alone...yes, you paid too much. If this coin has some sort of sentimental value (first Half Dime purchased, first coin that you bought on your own, etc...) then no, you can't put a price on a memory.

If I am in doubt about a potential purchase...I will wait it out for a little bit of time. You will know when something "feels" right or wrong. We all learn as we go along in life, and those who have paid the price for their experiences know that education is expensive. As long you learn from it, it's all good.

Enjoy the hobby!

I would of paid 13 for it too. I like it and it's nice :)
But I feel it's worth around 10. I don't know the value.

You might have slightly overpaid, but I wouldn't worry about. The degree to which the coin would normally be valued at (IMO) and your purchase is minimal.

Sold a Half Dime for $15 and didn't expect it to go that high. It was part of a lot and was going to keep it but decided to sell it. It looked like it might have been cleaned like many coins of that time period. Your coin has some dings and dents but looks original, which is good since 80% of old coins have been cleaned.

Like they said, if it's worth it to you, it's a good deal. Besides 2 or 3 bucks isn't that big a deal. BUT just to make you jealous, I found a 1831 Half Dime next to a railroad track one day. If it wasn't the oldest thing in my collection I'd gladly sell it to you. Here is a picture.

Isn't that funny that people metal detect to find things like that and you find it just laying there with people never even noticing. Funny what you can find when you are aware. I did metal detecting and never found anything but junk but found a silver dime and a pair of earrings in a coin machine reject bin and a silver earring laying on the ground while walking my dog.

If you like it be happy if you don't you will be doubtful. Always look for the best quality that you can afford; thats what I do.

If you want a coin or need for a set to me it really does not matter the price. If your happy that is all that matters.

I completely agree with civilwarcoincollector. Don't fret over a few bucks. I just overpaid for 4 Walking Liberties but I can still sleep at night because they're awesome additions to my collection.

At one time or another every collector has paid a bit too much for one or more coins and that's okay if you feel what you are getting is worth the price paid. Don't worry about it, eventually you'll come across a real bargain that will make up for that purchase. It's all part of the nature of coin collecting.
