I've never seen this before myself, it seems like wherever the coin has been scratched/worn there's a copper-ish light brown colour showing through.

2004-P-Quarter,-Copper-Colour-Beneath-Outer-Layer

I'll try and weigh it asap, I don't have a scale unfortunately but might be able to borrow one.

That is why they are called 'multi-ply plated coins'. Steel core, thin layer of nickel, thick layer of copper and a thick layer of nickel on the outside...

I must have a similar issue with a coin but only a spot. I took a picture from two different views.. I am not terribly knowledgeable about the plating process myself...so tks SPP-Ottawa! Maybe attending would be a good idea

Howcome this is the only quarter I've yet to see with this happening on it? If I sandpapered any 'p' quarter I should see this beneath the surface?
