Hi,

First time poster but I'm a long time collector who has been out of the hobby for awhile. I have a 1934 Texas half with an error on it that I'd sure appreciate your thoughts about. There is a die break in an interesting location and I'm considering having it certified. Sam Houston has a seriously bloody nose and I've viewed many Texas Halves online and don't see it on other coins. The first two images here show the coin and the 3rd is maginified showing the die break.

Fishing for opinion here as to whether or not you feel it is worth being certified? Do you feel the die break would even matter? I'd just hate to spend a bunch of money to have this coin certified AU with no mention of the error. If it were your coin, would you take the time and expense? Really curious here and would appreciate some feedback.

Larry

First ... to the CCF Larry ... pleased to have you here with us ... you will find lots of friendly advise and many true numismatic experts.

Your small photo size makes it somewhat challenging to make observations on this coin ... my opinion is that Mr. Houston nose is suffering from a die chip in a very inopportune location.

You are certainly aware that die chips, die cracks, clashes, etc are considered a normal part of the minting process and unless truly extreme in nature generally do not command much attention ... in fact some collectors consider them to be a negative on the coin.

Your coin does not exhibit IMHO a collectible 'error' ... and as such my considered opinion is that having this 1934 Texas certified for only the purposes of noting the die chip is not a worthy investment.

Of course ... if the coin were to grade better than MS65 then having it certified might be worthwhile die chip notwithstanding ... your images do not lead me to believe this would be the case.

Welcome! Hope you enjoy your time on CCF and become an active participant!

I concur with nickelsearcher, I would not incur the expense of having this coin graded by a third-party service for the purpose of noting the die crack/chip. It would not be considered a collectible error by the vast majority of commemorative collectors.

Die cracks are sometimes used as a diagnostic to help determine if a coin is genuine or a counterfeit, or if a coin is an example of a particular collectible variety. I'm not aware of the need for such diagnostics on the rather common 1934 Texas half-dollar,

Enjoy the coin for what it is, an attractive member of the classic US commemorative series!

Many thanks to both of you for welcoming me to the community here and for the terrific feedback!

I've been away from collecting for awhile and am getting back into it. I honestly didn't know die clips were insignificant and thought I might have had something here.

You told me exactly what I needed to know and I appreciate it. There's no way this one would grade MS-65. We're more in the realm of AU here, but you're right, it is a wonderful coin and I'm very pleased to have it.

Thanks again for the pointers. Much appreciated!
