Hi All,

I wanted to get your take on APMEX corp. as far as buying gold or silver bars from.

I was just on their website and they offer different grams of gold bars to buy. I am interested in buying small gold bars for the time being since money is tight. They have different gold bars that are offered and stamped as well with different fronts. Examples like Pamp Suisse, Perth Mint and APMEX gold bars to name a few. Which one to buy I have no clue and can you trust the gold content that is stamped on each one?
Any comments or opinions is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much
John

If you're buying small bars like 2.5, 5, or 10 gram then make sure they are properly hallmarked (like 999 fine gold, 5g.) and from known manufacturers. I prefer anything under 1oz to be sealed inside an assay card and serialized.

I admit I can be paranoid but when selling these things can and do make your bars more salable. If you can afford them without paying a huge premium; Pamp or Credit Suisse, Perth Mint, Engelhard, or JM will be best. Good luck!

I highly recommend the Perth Mint 10 gram bar from APMEX. It is the lowest priced Assayed gold bar they have in 10 grams. Very beautiful bar too.

currently 1 gram of gold is $53.11. The 10 gram bar will cost you $556.45, or $55.64 per gram. So about $2 per gram premium. Much better then buying a 1 gram bar at $72.xx

PAMP suisee, Credit Suisse, Perth Mint, Islanbul mint are some reputed mints. If you can get bars with certificates and in tamper proof packing, that will guarantee authenticity. You can but 1 gram, 2.5 gram, 5 gram, 10 gram, 20 gram, 1 oz, 10 oz bars. The smaller the bar, the more premium you pay. For 1 oz bars from PAMP or Credit Suisse, the premium is around $30 per oz. For smaller bars, it is more.
AMPEX is good place to buy but keep in mind their shipping cost. Goldmart is another cheap source of bullion. If you want smaller bars like 1 gram or 2.5 gram, ebay may make sense.

Gold from the Royal Canadian Mint is the purest in the world at .9999, in bars or the Maple Leaf coins. Slightly more expensive but you can't go wrong when re-selling.

Many other mints/refineries sell 9999 gold, not just the RCM
e.g. PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, Johnson Matthey, Perth...

The RCM do come out with (almost) yearly issues 99999 gold, but that's getting into collectable territory and value on resale will depend on your venue.

Careful on ebay. Many fakes on these gram-sized bars.
Factor in shipping. APMEX and Goldmart prices may look good but shipping will make it not worth your while unless buying in larger quantities.

My advice is that if this will be a hobby, buy what you can afford and be happy. If this is to be a semi-serious investment, stay away from gram bars. The premium on top of shipping prices will swamp whatever movement in the gold market.

Poboxw, you mentioned "careful on ebay", do you have any advice on how to spot a fake? I've been reading about different purchasing methods *** Edited by Staff - Please review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***, and am interested in ebay, but don't want to be fooled. Any advice would be appreciated.

Last week I encountered a very convincing fake Perth Mint one ounce bar. The only reason we knew it was fake was because the package was slightly torn and the weight was off (31.640g). They never give you more gold than you paid for. Looked on (Not Allowed) (king of thieves) and they sell them as gold plated brass. Yuck! The other big indicator was the source, which was a sketchy person known to us, famous in the industry for not paying his workers or subcontractors, so always consider the source when buying gold. As an aside I would suggest buying the largest piece you can afford so that you don't take such a hit on the premium. Get the plainest most ugliest bar with the lowest premium because gold is gold.
