Hi Guys,
Had this coin a few months now, I believe its Alexander or his bro Philip?
Can't tell as no letters are visible behind throne, any ideas

Did you purchase it from a reliable dealer?
The surfaces look porous.

Yet he could not give your a guarantee that it is genuine, if not any info on the king it is meant to have been issued under?

Sorry Masis, I should have been more clear.
I bought this coin knowing that it was either an Alexander or Philip coin.
I am confident that this dealer is known on this forum-

You have not specified any dimensions. I assumed it is a drachm. But after looking around a bit it did occur to me that it might be something else ? The style seems a bit 'crude'and the Zeus on reverse is different than most (not all) in that the eagle is held up very high. I cannot make up my mind about it.

At first glance it looks good to me (though not knowing the scale it could be drachm or tetradrachm) but there is a worrying line I can see near the edge on the portrait side (similar to if it was a casting you might find a line where they cut the rubber moulding)

That in combination with porosity would be off-putting for me because if not cast at the correct temperature porosity is common. (I am not saying it is cast or not but just that I would be concerned about that line)

Someone on this forum has many of these, I forget who but maybe they will be along to offer their opinion.

From the pictures I think this coin looks OK.
One HAS to remember that these coins are usually found buried, and they require cleaning.

To get it to this appearance, with bare silver metal showing, requires acid of the correct concentration, and applied for exactly the right amount of time. It requires an experienced professional to do this. When they are cleaned with this approach, this is what you get. Some surface porosity is often the result. This coin looks typical to me, as regards professional cleaning.

So no concern over that line near the edge? I guess I am just naturally sceptical of all... anyway here is my Alexander drachm of Sardis...

Alexander-The-Great-Or-Philip-Coin?

Same monogram, pose and same style throne legs... mine has a bee logo for Sardis and the pole is straight where yours has bobbles....

Alexander drachms are more common than Phillip ones I gather judging by the amount for sale but I would investigate to see if there are any differences between them other than the off flan writing.

Also maybe its possible that one produced with your combination of features and not the other. In any case its unlikely that anyone but an expert would know off the top of his head without looking at any reference materials.

Now I know someone on here has 30+ drachms, can anyone remember who it was? Maybe he would know if there is any way to tell the difference between Phillip and Alex.

I think you should seek a second opinion on the edge, I understand why you are asking, but I am still reasonably happy with it.
