Continuing to tear my hair out trying to take good pictures of shiny things :) I like these coins. Wish this one was toned-- there are some spectacular toned examples on PCGS's Coin Facts and it really brings out the reverse design. Maybe I should stick this one in one of the old manilla coin envelopes from our stash. A few hundred silver coins which were stored in those for decades have nice toning, some with wonderful rainbow hues.

Another fine example. I would guess high AU on this one based on what looks like wear on the sails and his curl. I am not great at grading these so I would not be surprised of others more knowledgeable than myself come back with MS, weak strike.

I should take a better look at this one in hand, tilting this way and that way. Looks like light wear to me on the cheek and the sails, particularly the right sail, but I need to check pics of a high grade coin. I'm guessing ~mid AU?

It may just be the lighting, but looking at your images makes me think the coin has been cleaned. To my eye, the coin does not have a "natural" look to it - it appears as if it may have been subject to cleaning/polishing at some point.

I think you may be right about the cleaning. In hand there's something unnatural about the color (especially the reverse) and there may be some very fine lines on the reverse. I'm surprised it hasn't re-toned. It's been sitting undisturbed and unprotected for decades. Makes me wonder if some type of cleaning chemical left a protective residue.

I'm going AU - cleaned.
Hair lines from rubbing are fairly obvious on the reverse ... for example ... look under the stern of the Santa Maria through the '14' and to the left of the globe.

Looks like the pair I bought at a coin show for ten bucks apiece. Cleaned and scrubbed but I still like em.

Thanks for the "look to", nickelsearcher. I find that I often mistake the details of a cleaning for wear when I look at images on the screen. Thankfully I am better about it when look at a coin in hand.

I actually want to say thank you for the pictures. If that is trouble picture taking - I am curious what your good pictures turn out like!
I was thinking the same thing commems was thinking - the coin doesn't look like it has the mint finish to it - and then as was pointed out there does appear to be polish scratches. I have a couple of these toned and you are right they do take on a whole different air or feel... I like the coin your showing just fine though!
