hi everyone,
looks like a nice forum.
i am looking for info on an 1865 indian with doubling on all the obverse lettering and feathers. it is the "fancy 5".
the reverse has no doubling at all.
i can't find a listing on this coin anywhere.
it's not in cherry pickers. I don't want to put it up for auction until I know what it is worth.
any help is greatly appreciated.
thanks, jeff

We would definitely need you to post a picture. Let us know if you need help. Close-ups of the doubling as well as a full pic of obverse and reverse would be the best.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!!

It is possible that you have what is known as "Longacre doubling". James Longacre was Chief Engraver of the Mint from 1844 to 1869 and he is the designer of the Indian Head cent and other period coins. I am not an expert on this type of doubling so I will give you a link to check out with pics and descriptions.

hi metalman,
yes, that was me on tq.
i have had this indian for years, but never looked at it with a loupe until recently. I got excited for awhile.
the kennedy proof that has the die crack is a nice deep cameo. the crack starts on the rim under the o in dollar and goes through the l's and up through the arrow heads. I would like to have it slabbed, but I don't want to break open the set.
thanks again for the help.

the fancy 5 variety isn't necessarily a doubled die. both a straight tail and curved tail were used that year.
