I have seen several Standing Liberty quarters with the dates worn off that are graded with dates annotated. I have several SLQ's with unreadable dates. How do they know what the date is when it is worn off? How can they (NGC, PCGS, etc) certify the dates?

I am not an expert on SLQ's but I know that you can figure out if one is a 1916 or 1917 based on the fact that it is an early type along with certain attributes like head shape or size of the 2 dots above Liberty's head. So am sure that there are ways to figure out the dates of others based only on their features.

It depends on the type, 1 or 2. Type one usually can be easily figured out because there were two designs, one for 1916 and one for 1917 with type 1. The 1916 markers are very specific, here is a good thread on that https://goccf.com/t/142013.

Type 2 has variations and sometimes can be determined by looking at specific things. For example, the date in 1925 was recessed into the design to protect it. There are many other things that may be helpful so please post your pictures!

As far as I know, I think only type 1 can be dated if they are dateless.

I guess what I was trying to say that for Type 2, you can figure out a date range based on the changes that were made in 1925 (i.e. 1917 to 1924 or 1925 to 1930).

Thanks for the link to the other topic. Based upon the comparison photos, it is a 1917 - 1924. Given teh condition, it is going in the junk silver pile.
