Liberty Shops Auctions is trying to educate people about bidding on coins at auction. How to grade and identify problem coins, so that they know what to look for and get better quality coins and not overpay for problem coins.

Here is the coin that they displayed. What is wrong with this coin?

The whole coin looks off to me. Is it a fake?

Well, the fact that Carson City didn't mint any 1879's kinda counts against it....
Rest in Peace

It is a counterfeit Trade dollar. With the advent of the Morgan dollar , Trade dollars were no longer acceptable in China and Trade dollars began to flood back into the U.S.. In 1879 Trade dollars were only made in proof for collectors.

Obviously this one is not a proof. Should be getting my Silver Eagle prize next week.
