I can searched online but am having problems finding any information. Were any coins issued by the Tasmanian government before it became part of Australia (or even after for that matter)? Or tokens?

Any info to point me in the right direction would be great. Thanks.

Tokens - yes several penny & halfpenny tokens were issued by merchants in the 1850s & 1860s - mostly in Hobart, but I recall seeing at least one from Launceston, and there's one from Deloraine, and another from Westbury.
There was also a penny token issued by R. Josephs, with a depiction of the NewTown Toll Gate. My best guess is that the toll collector issued these, but I have not researched the point.

Prior to Federation in 1901, the governments of Van Diemen's Land & Tasmania did not issue coins.
After 1901, coinage became an exclusively federal matter.

Good Morning,
My research has brought me to the conclusion that Tasmania did not release any coins although they may well have produced tokens - probably private stuff. Tasmania, like the other British colonies that made up pre-federation Australia, used English coinage until 1911 when, after 10 years of federation, Australia released it own currency based on the British currency of the day. That is pounds, shillings and pence. Because of the shortage of hard currency in the early days of British settlement on the east coast foreign coins were used as was bartering and also rum was used. Foreign coins were used with an agreed value. A holey Dollar and dump were produced from the Spanish Dollar in 1813 and Adelaide produced the Adelaide Pound in 1852. Their was a mint in Sydney producing gold coins from the 1850's.

Hi allranger

I have attached a picture of the Tasmanian Token that is in my collection.

It is well worn. Indeed, it seems like the coin may have been in the waistcoat pocket of some chap who fought a duel - and survived !

I once had a McIntosh & Degraves shilling in perfectly unmarked uncirculated condition sitting in the palm of my hand once, the next item was a Two Pound Port Philip gold pattern.
All 100% genuine.

Where did I see these?

I had made a special trip and visit by personal appointment to the strong room of the
Coins & Medal Department of the British Museum.

Colonial coins (and the holey dollar) circulated quite a bit later in Tasmania than they did on the mainland. I spoke quite a bit to a colonial numismatist from down there who said that the holey dollar circulated quite freely until the 1850's in Tassie. It was de-monetised in NSW in 1825 or so I believe.

My son as an 1827 British penny.
The whole production of these was shipped to Tasmania.
They saw very heavy circulation in Australia, and even in lower grades, are quite scarce in GB today, and correspondingly bring high prices at auction.

I have a 2003 masterpieces in silver set of the Port Phillip pattern coins.
They really don't fit anywhere in my collection, I just bought them because of the history behind them and I liked the deigns
