Hi Everyone I hope that this is going to work. I found this coin in my hog lot. As you can tell the pigs have done a number on it. My question is what is it and what is it worth ?`It measures 1 1/8" Dia. and is dated 1784. Thank you for your help. Bill Identified - moved to World Coins forum - Sap

Carolus (Charles) III Spanish coin. I have no idea of value. I think these came in different denominations. If you try a Google search for: Carolus III 1784, you'll find lots of info and pics to compare.

Jerry B is right, it's Charles III Spanish. It's silver and it's probably 2 reales but if you could post a pic of the obverse we could tell for sure and where it was mint (it could have been mint in Mexico, Bolivia, Peru etc).
As far as what it's worth, melt value for the silver should be around US$15.

Welcome billz! Spanish reals were common currency in the US during colonial times. Cool piece of history.

If you don't mind telling us, about where in the country is this hog lot with Spanish two bits in the mud?

... and did you spot it laying in the mud, or did you find it with a metal detector? Maybe there's more.

The coin was found on top of the ground. The pig lot is located 5 miles west of Galion Ohio, about 60 miles North of Columbus Ohio. Used a metal detector on the lot and did not find anything.

This coin was minted more than 30 years before the first white settlers arrived in the Galion area! Just how long were these Spanish coins maintained in the US circulation, anyway? Or was it lost by some earlier trapper or mountain man?

They were legal tender until the Coinage Act of 1857, which is also when the US stopped using Half Cents and large cents. Here's an interesting related link... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_dollar. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the 1776 8 reales pictured on that Wikipedia page is a fake. Whoever wants a picture of their 8 reales piece on the Wikipedia page should have at it. ;-)
