Just a question I have a friend that is looking at purchasing one of these for $1800 unslabed. It's from a dealer but I keep telling her not to unless certified. Apparently the dealer is telling her it's worth $6000 but letting it go for $1800. Just wondering would you.

Yes, it's not wise to buy such a key of the series unslabbed. For $6000, it must a luster bomb with amazing surfaces and PL. The deep discount sounds generous but scary at the same time.

$1800 isn't that bad for 1948. I regularly see them for $1500 AU+ condition. make sure you check the ridges for tarnishing and the "P"'s & "A"'s "R"'s for the white residue of silver cleaner. I see cleaned 1948 so often it makes me sick.

^ yeah john brings up a good and very important point. The coin may look like a high MS due to a cleaning job. The dealer is well aware of this and may be trying to pass off an "ms-64" for a big discount as a favor. I would post pictures if you can, but in general, unless you trust him 100% dont buy it

Unslabbed, it may be a cluster bomb rather than a luster bomb.
Prime target for those fakers from China. Make sure the labelling is OK too, at that price level.

Very good info the members have given you Northener0.

There seems to be lots of red flags flying, I agree, with Pokermandude, the dealer wanted $6000.00 but now is letting you have it for $1800.00

NorthenerO, I'd be weary about a dealer selling me a Key date at 35% trends. Remember Grandma's sayin,' "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!" That especially applies to this Hobby.

Now why would the dealer sell it for $1800 if he said it's worth $6000? I'm pretty sure it isn't worth $6000, but that's not to say $1800 is not a good deal. Perhaps the dealer simply wanted to give the illusion the coin is a great deal.

If you don't know how to grade it yourself, I would definitely not touch it. Can you take pictures of it post them here before you buy it? If it's a nice coin it may be worth it.
