I may be wrong. If so, I'll be corrected, but the coin looks like it was polished before it was entombed. The reverse was never exposed to air so it stayed shiny.
both sides has been polished as you can see by the reflective surface in the eagles breast. If you do use it as a pocket piece it can wear the coin down but it will lose a few grades but the value would stay the same because a problem free example (like it would be when wore down past the polishing) even in lower grade would be worth the same and maybe even a little more than a polished example like you have now
Aww really? Ok thanks. I figured that there would be hairline scratches if it had been polished. Live and learn I guess. Thanks for the assistance everyone!
I think the obverse is simply a victim of having been a nice piece of jewelry. Simple wearing of the item would result in all those scratches. Jackets and shirt sleeves rubbing over it and the like.
The reverse IS lovely. I can't say wether I would pocket piece it or not.
I'm not gonna use it as a pocketpiece. Since.the.reverse.is.mirror like, I'm going with experts and assuming it has been polished. Unless it was a proof, it shouldnt havethat kind of finish.
