Are clad Proofs going way of dodo?Quote: What is most interesting about (the 2013 Silver Proof Quarters) set is 12,942 more of these have been sold than the clad version already. One issue this article didn't touch on is that many clad buyers might be waiting for the full clad Proof Set. The early sell-out of the 2012 full Sets may cause many clad buyers who normally would have bought just the clad Quarters to step up to the full Sets. The Five-Quarter Set market is different than the full Proof Set market, so I don't think we'll see a year where the full Silver Proof Set outsells the Clad version. It would be very interesting if the Silver Five-Quarter Set outsells the Clad in the final 2013 mintage. Given the strong prices for the 2010 and 2012 Clad Proof Sets, and the much-improved packaging for the Five-Quarter Sets this year, the Clad version could be a winner. I just happened to have bought the clad proof sets for my new Dansco and the 2012/2013 were the cheapest to buy by far. The silver sets will be quite a bit more expensive but I do love the ATB's.

I agree with 52raymo but I don't think that the clad proofs are going to be going the way of the dodo simply because of both the price and that they are supposed to be some sort of a more perfect version of circulating coins and appear to be accepted as such. When I look at the silver proofs I always think of inventment quality and potential.
Although I must admit that with the prices the the mint charges for the silver proofs the only ones who are making any money off them right now is the mint. Perhaps in a few years the value of the silver proofs will go up. However right now the impace of the silver market is not really helping their investment value.
Due to the way that I see the numismatic market is that clad proofs (especially in the commerative coins) has potential for increasing their value.
It would indeed be nice if the selling fortunes of these coins were reversed as DNA says.

No surprise to me that the silver coins sell in greater numbers. Quite often, that's what the market wants to buy. Mint supplies to meet the demand. I have seen several instances where the proof NCLT sells in bigger numbers than the uncirculated NCLT, even when the sale price of the proof version can me much higher.

Quote: the proof NCLT sells in bigger numbers than the uncirculated NCLT, Modern U.S. Commemorative Half Dollars and Silver Dollars consistently sell more in Proof finish than in BU finish, but a Silver Proof Quarters Set outselling the Clad version is unprecedented. Quote: The clad proofs cannot go away. I still have holes to fill! As low as the 2012 full Proof Set mintages ended up being, the Clad Set was still double the Silver version. No need for alarm bells unless the 2013 full Silver Proof Set outsells its Clad counterpart.

Agreed with DNA the clads arent going anywhere. I think all were seeing is a reflection of whats available. Theres no reason to buy the clad quarters if youre going to get the proof set anyway where a lot of people will need silver quarters for an album or just because they like them

To fill all my albums I get the full silver proof set and the 5 quarter clad proof set to fill all my albums. I don't collect proof halves or dimes, so I end up with 60 cents face of proof silver left over. I could do it the other way around, but the leftovers would be almost valueless in that case.

Quote: To fill all my albums I get the full silver proof set and the 5 quarter clad proof set 2012 was a great year to do that, because your leftover coins (the 2012 Silver Proof JFK and Dime) are below 500K mintage each.
