Anybody on here own one of these or know of their rarity?
I am thinking of buying one to add to my civil war collection and wanted some advice.

some info about the coin

The obverse of the token depicts a stylized grouping of the legend THE WEALTH OF THE SOUTH RICE TOBACCO SUGAR COTTON. The reverse shows a palmetto tree in the center with glory rays, cannon and cannonballs. The legend is NO SUBMISSION TO THE NORTH and the date 1860 is below.

The token was designed by Benjamin True and struck in Cincinnati by John Stanton. It was marketed in the South where its sentiment was strongly favored. The philosophy was that the strength of the South came from the land and its crops. The strength of the North was based on man-made facilities and activities such as banking and manufacturing.

Thanks for any help

Having owned four or five of these over the years, my favorite one was an unholed XF that had been awash with silver; and, having about 75% remaining atop the olive-colored brass token. IMHO, the silvering enhances the value, as does the lack of a hole.

Last year, I looked at one that was for sale in a coin shop. The surface exhibited XF detail upon an evenly rough surface. It had the look of a possibly cast copy, so I passed on it. It reminded me of similar Becker copies but was unstamped. The original tokens are typically well struck and appear most often in grades of VF or better. I did own one that was a VG and apparently someone's pocket-piece at one time.

Maybe this discussion of last year would be of value?

I strongly recommend that the OP acquires copies of 'Patriotic Civil War Tokens 5th Revised Edition,' and 'U.S. Civil War Store Cards.' Both were written by George and Melvin Fuld.

If in fact the OPs nickname reflects a pursuit of Civil War Coins, both of these books will be invaluable.

Thanks for the book info. I collect only civil war coins but I really am falling for these tokens and may expand my collection.
