This is a message to the people at the mint. I've always said the reason you rarely ever see half dollars and even dollar coins in circulation. Is because there is no spot in the cash register. If there is not a spot in the register, than the stores aren't going to carry them and they won't get out. Recently I read an article on Coin World that they ordered Presidential dollars to a halt. Any opinions on this subject? I've asked a few people and they said that they've never received a half dollar in change.

Thats the basis of why the dollar coins constantly failed. If the merchants don't hand them out the consumers aren't going to use them. FOr some reason nobody can figure this out.

Bit difficult for me to understand.

In Australia, the half dollar, the dollar and two dollar coins are heavily relied upon as a staples in the coinage curculation system.
There ARE spots for each denomination in every cash register, but that is far from the only reason why these denominations are so heavily relied upon.

My wife tried handing dollar coins out at the store years ago. People refused to take them. They said they did not want those things, they wanted real money.

Not another $1 bill vs $1 coin thread...

Here's the executive summary:

1) The dollar bill must die. This has been recommended 7 times in the past 20 years.
2) It will save money. Canada's program reported 10x the savings they expected. To say it isn't proven is hogwash.
3) People prefer them 2 to 1 if you mention the savings. If you leave that important fact out they don't.
4) They will not weight down your pockets. A dollar coin weighs less than 4 quarters.
5) Coins outlast polymer notes by a factor of 10 (realistically closer to 15 or 20).
6) We're the only major economy that still has singles in paper. This is no surprise. We're a stubborn country.
7) Yes, all modern vending machines can take dollar coins with minimal adjustment. All machines that don't need to upgrade or die, as the small dollar has been around since 1979.

All of these are strongly established.

Here's the executive summary for our other coinage:

1) The penny and the nickel must die. They cost more than 2x their face value to produce and ship. This is true even if the materials were free.
2) If we eliminate the nickel, we should also eliminate the quarter and keep our coins to the nearest 10th of a dollar. Some people want to round to a 20th and keep the nickel and quarter, which brings me to:
3) The half will not circulate until it is re-sized and other coins are eliminated to make room for it.
4) If we do not re-denominate our coins to higher values, they will never circulate. (Currently most change flows one way, from business to customer. This is due to how worthless the dollar is.)
5) In the 1950s our coins used to be worth 10 times what they are today. No one complained about carrying them.

These are a bit more up to debate.

Vis a vis the half dollar: What can we do for it? It's at least overdue for a facelift and given how little a dollar is worth (as I mentioned) it may play a larger part in our future coinage.

Discuss. :-)

Good information Steve! It's what needs to be done. The nickel should have been resized a long time ago. Why does the dime have to be small? And why does the half dollar have to be bigger then the dollar coin?

Kick out the penny and you have room for the dollar. Kick out the dollar bill and now you have room for the Two Dollar Bill. Hello, America! I'm surprised more people don't complain about the dime.

Eliminate the cent tray and you have room for the half. Most cash drawers I have seen have a collect all place for halves, dollars, rubber bands paper clips etc..

What we all say and/or think here is only a really small protion of the populace. Remember that there are millions and millions of people that like the Penny. There are more and more people in the USA now that have never seen a Half Dollar so you can't blame them if they say WHAT IS THAT? I'll never forget the embarrasment at a restaurant when I left some of those baby dollars on the table for a tip. The waitress sort of said loudly, "Hew sir, you left some of your kids play money on the table" I don't use those anymore. However, I am starting to see more and more wierd looks when trying to spend a Half Dollar anywhere. Some grab them and put them aside as if Gold. Some look as if they want to tell me where to put them.

Aye, but mere sentiment and misunderstanding cannot be the driving force behind sound fiscal and business policy. :-/

You guys keep on and on about it, but don't get the message that no one wants dollars as coins weighing down their pockets. What we have works fine. This is hobby site, not a political action forum to kill the dollar bill.

Drop it already.

Already addressed in bullet points 1, 3, & 4.

Back to the OP is the more appropriate line of action.

Half dollar not circulating: What gives?
