Large date = low S
Small date = high S
I always wonder who spends so much time looking at every coin to see all those little, tiny, small differences.
Wide AM, Close AM, small dates, large dates, etc.
And yet companies like Whitman and Dansco and all the rest make is so you need them to fill an Album

16 D Merc-it's a large date. There have been many, many posts about IDing these. Just pull up some past threads on the subject and you will find lotsa useful info, including great pictures from coop.

I found two 1970 s pennies the other day and one looks like the s is closer to the 9. What could this be? The other one looks like the coin in the picture above.

In 1970, mintmarks were punched individually in each die. Since over 690 million 70-S cents were minted, that amounts to thousands of dies and potential mintmark positions.

sorry bass that's pretty much what that means . 1916 merk I agree with the others Large date I've found like 500 1970 S all large date . But I'm going to keep on looking way I see it my odds are getting better at finding a small date
