Here is the latest addition to my type set. To contrast with my mint state 1928 SLQ I picked up an honestly circulated 1917 type 1. I sort of like the look of these at this stage of wear. What do you think ANACS gave this one?

My first impression was F-15.

VF-20 would be my guess based on the obverse alone.

VG-8 for me, the date is barely visible.

I will guess VG-10. Details appear to be F but the date is a little weak and I think they may have deducted 1-2 grades for that.

This one is tricky...the date wear is inconsistent with the rest of the coin. I would call this a VF 25. but at the same time there are parts of the coin that tell me that it would come back as a VG. This should be interesting to see what it came back as. edit: I changed my mind I'm going with f-10. I think I have just been looking at it for too long.

I think it's more from a weak strike than wear, the rim area is full, and the stars are complete around the shield. A tough call, I think I'll go with my first impression (I too was all over the place in my head after reading comments here). I always look at the photo before reading further, just to get an unbiased though in my mind first. F15, I could easily see this as a VF20 coin, but I certainly don't think it deserves a VG grade, it's too nice for that.

The big reveal time. I will start out by saying that when I saw this I thought it was undergraded. The details of the rim, shield, stars, head, all told me this was at the very least a F12 coin, possibly better. I think the reverse drags this down a bit, but I would not be surprised if it received a VF20 if ever resubmitted. Perhaps some of the VG guesses were because of the date, but with the earlier SLQ's, the wear on the date can be present into the VF ranges, while this is not the case with the later SLQ's, which you wouldn't expect to see date wear until you are around VG. D0ubl3Eagle won with his guess of VG-10.

I'm not overly surprised, the obverse is MUCH better than the reverse, I'm just surprised it dragged it down that far =/

I have seen cases of grading here in the CCF, where we disagree with the TPG, even when we know their grade. Even the owner has asked for opinions as to whether a coin should be re graded. I am not in the least surprised by this. It is all based on semi opinion-fact, presumably related to a widely? accepted set of standard photo grades. Sheldon and TPG's have eased some grading problems, but have not in an absolute sense, solved any of them.
