For the veterans in coin collecting, what do you think of buying coins and sets directly from the USMint.gov, as a long term investment, what do you think of their prices?

Just a small add on, which are the best coins to collect, that appreciates faster then others, which do you recommend?

I buy from the mint and I think others here do as well. I think it is a good source for the new coins. A little pricey sometimes, but if you buy everything you want at one time, you only get one $5 shipping charge, regardless if all coins ship at once.

In most cases you probably wont buy a cheaper coin that from the Mint. Once the Mint runs out of a coin, then the only way you can buy it is in the secondary market. That usually means big premiums. The 20th Anniversary ASE sets I believe sold around $100.00 last year, now the cheapest-ungraded and picked over coins are selling for over 300.00

I like some of the commeratives. I bought a couple of the Jamestown coins. I will also buy a few of the presidential sets when they come out. I also stick to the proofs....

I buy from the mint regularly. I agree that the Unc may appreciate faster due to lower production, but I buy the proofs too. I think it also depends on buying what you like; being a military buff I bought the Marine Iwo Jima comm, but passed on the Jamestown. I would have bought the Silver Buffalo due to the classic design but didn't have the extra cash to spend. For me the Gold and Platinum is out; plus I don't like the Platinum coins. I have a complete roll set (to date) of the State Quarters from the mint...which will probably turn out to be a poor investment, especially since I started late and had to buy the earlier rolls on the secondary market at a premium...so in that sense the person who bought them from the mint originally made a good investment.

I purchase all the newly issued coins from the mint. I think there prices are lower then getting them from the secondary market. I also like the fact that you can setup subscriptions and they bill you credit card and ship the coin when it is available.
