Here is my:
1790s *DEBTORs GOAL* conder 1/2 HALF PENNY token SOMERSETSHIRE/BATH Token. It is a bit worn but I really like the colors and what I think may be a lamination. Let me know waht you think. I realize that many may look at this as damaged;) Feel free to share whatever:D Opinions are like navels, everybody has one! I also find the the "iohn" spelling pretty interesting.

John Howard (English philanthropist and reformer in the fields of penology and public health)
•Female seated instructing a boy with key to unlock the prison doors.
•Legend: GO FORTH (radiated) / REMEMBER THE DEBTORS IN GOAL

'Debtor's Gaol' perhaps. In reality a workhouse for the poor. No need for these, with 'dole' unemployment payments from the Government.
Interesting spelling re the word 'GOAL'. The British word for 'jail' is GAOL, pronounced the same way as 'jail'.

I prefer the American spelling.

I thought that Work-houses and Debtor's Prisons were discrete and separate institutions:
the qualifications for entry were quite different.

About 20 years ago, a Policeman where I live realized that a vestige of the old law was still on the statute-book.
When he didn't have enough evidence to lay a charge, he'd find a creditor who would assert that a debtor owed $500 or more, and was about to abscond. That was enough for a warrant to hold the suspect for a few days.

Back to coins: I've seen a few tokens that referred to Workhouses or to Newgate Prison. Conder, and others, dealt with some interesting social issues.

There is a long standing UK prison reform group called The Howard League for Penal Reform named after him and he was obviously highly regarded.

That's a very professional mounting so someone cared enough to pay to have it done.

Peter THOMAS: Fair point. It is common practice for prisoners in modern jails to be paid for legitimate work.

When did Somerset become a shire?
Always, as with many English counties like Devon. The "shire" has been dropped by custom and practice.
