How can I as a beginner know what is the composition of the raw coins I am buying?
Are there any tests that can made on the spot to recognize the composition?

No there isn't. There are too many alloy composition out there such as bronze, nickel-cupro, silver, plated nickel, etc - I don't know how you can tell from just looking unless you send the coins to mass spectrometry.

Alternatively you can get a catalogue and read more about them. That doesn't really help about counterfeits though unfortunately. It does take time to understand.
