The Mexican Libertads are strange coins. They are beautiful coins, my favorite among all the world bullion coins, but for some reason, not a popular coin, both in Mexico and world wide, hence the absurdly low mintages. I think a few reasons why are, due to the high tax rate in Mexico, that diminishes demand, in country, for these coins. We all know that if your coin isn't wanted by your own populace, that diminishes international demand also. Human nature steers the majority to most want only what other people want.
I think one of the other reasons is the lack of a designated denomination on the coin. Many collectors of world bullion who collect for numismatic value above bullion value, prefer to collect legal tender coins , even if in name only. Many collectors of Mexican gold prefer to collect the 50 peso coins. I think the rarity of the mintages is offset by collectors placement of this coin somewhere between collectible bullion and boutique coin status.
Some of the fractionals have total mintages in the hundreds and at MS 69 in the lower double digits. But due to the low demand for these coins , the prices don't reflect these numbers. The last one, like yours, I saw go at auction last fall, went for about $1000.

Thanks So much again Denco7. Now I don't no if I want to bid on this coin. Maybe it's better to get a 50 peso gold coin in a much rarer date? ALL REPLIES ARE WELCOME

If you like these coins, then $875 is a good price. They are under valued and under appreciated. At some point the value has to catch up with these coins. I personally find them more collectible than Pandas. people that do collect them are willing to pay for the scarcity. The business strikes ( non proof ) are more plentiful (not by much ) and have prices more in line with straight bullion.
Also read up on the 20 peso gold coins. Very few in higher grades but non the less. collectible.

Did you decide to bid on it?
I personally would go for it, the low mintages is a plus for me.

I would have also, but because I love the look of both the gold and silver proofs, not because of the investment potential. I would never encourage someone to buy or pass on a coin based solely on " investment potential "

Denco7...I didn't win the bid for the 2008 libertad gold proof...It went for around $1,039, I was off by $38. Denco7, can you please send me an email, I want to talk to about 50 peso gold and also the 20 peso gold coin with very higher grades. I really don't know much about the pesos and have a few questions to ask you if you don't mind. I will be out of the house most of the day and will check my mail box when I get the chance. Thanks, bobbart

Unless I needed it to fill my collection, I would have let it go at that price. I think $1000 would have been my top. I will drop you a PM.
