So we can have Bears, Dinosaurs, Beavers, British Monarchy, Doctors, Trees, Hockey, Football, Hockey Teams, Football Teams, but no John A. Mcdonald, or Pierre Trudeau.
Why is it that the US "gets it", and honors their icons? Is this Canada's inferiority complex/bulimic humility fearing it's ugly head again?
Personally, I find it disgusting.

That's a good question. I would assume because the King/Queen is our head of state.

Icons? Can't wait for George W. on a coin. Yeehaw. What about Gerry Ford or Jimmy Carter?!
We are Canadian not American. Our heritage is the British monarchy.
I have no issue with the Queen (or King) on our coins. PET on coin? Are you serious?!

Canadian Prime Minsters are on our currency. Thats good enough.
The Queen is head of state so that is why she is on the back of the coin. For the same reason the Queen is on the back of the Australian coins.

Its sorta/kinda been done before. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1867-1970-P...290704309419I did a Mint survey many man months ago. One of the questions dealt about having a coin series about the 22+ Prime Ministers of Canada. First off, it sounds a little bit like the US Presidential dollar series, but I was thinking of ways to make it much nicer. My idea is to make the coins, similar in look & style to the price Harry, William & Charles coins. A nice face picture and ultra-high relief. Of course, make them out of silver! 99.99%, not sterling. There are suppose to be 22 of them and distributed over 5 years, so perhaps a subscription offer, one coin every three months or so. Throw in a nice display box for the 22 coins, perhaps a space or two for whomever might be the next prime minister(s). I can't wait to get my very own Kim Campbell coin. She was a Prime Minister after all even if she was there for only 132 days. :)

I believe the OP is referring to commemmorative designs. The answer, for the most part, is that they won't sell like a dinosaur or hockey team. The RCM is more profit driven than by history and some would say that's good, some would say it's bad.

I'd rather honour Prime Ministers than beavers and snakes. The mint could produce a commemorative penny for Stephen Harper, under whose watch the last penny was made. Or Wilfrid Laurier, under whom the RCM first opened in 1908. Or R.B. Bennett, under whom the first silver dollar was produced in 1935 (unless it was Mackenzie King, who took over later in the year). Or the first father-son commemorative Prime Ministerial pair: Pierre & Justin. Kim Campbell would have a really little coin. Brian Mulroney's would be big and brassy. John Turner's would be a blank slug (he never sat in Parliament after becoming PM). I like this idea...

Who wouldn't want a Chretien "Proof" coin? Yankees: Just google Chretien and proof... You'll see what I mean.
America does a lot of things right, but they don't "get" everything. And we like to THINK that we're that much different than our neighbours who live across a HUUUUGE imaginary and arbitrary line.
