I've located a couple 2001 silver proof sets (10 coin sets) and was thinking about picking them up. I'm new to collecting so I'm learning as I go. I've found threads and such talking about how this set was more valuable but they were old threads. What is the deal with this set. Should I pick them up for $49 each? I could probably haggle the price a little. Thanks for any help. If this isn't the correct place to post this thread please advise as to where I would get more of a response. Thanks again. I'm enjoying learning about this new hobby.

Also, I see where they have sold on ebay around $65 range. Why is that?

49 is a good price. If you can get it lower than that even better.

They go a little more on ebay because the sellers lose 12 percent of the price to ebay fees, then if theyve offered free shipping thats another 3-5 dollars that eats into the sellers money.

How do you tell if these are actual silver sets or the clad proof sets?

The silver ones will say so both on the box and the slab things the coins are in. The only way I know of to be 100 percent sure would be to open it up and check the side of the quarter or dime and it should be all silver on the silver ones. Its unlikely that a legit dealer would have swapped them out

Do a tissue test. Lay a single sheet of tissue paper (toilet or facial tissue) over the coins in the set The dime , quarters , and half should look white through the tissue. A copper nickel coin like the nickel will look a dull gray If the "silver" coins look the same as the nickel then the coins have been swapped out. The beauty of this test is that it can be done without taking the coins out of the set. The down side is it can be fooled by plated coins. But a plated proof will usually be pretty obvious.

I bought a clad proof quarter and it looks just like one by looking at it. You can see it's not like silver. Not really sure how to explain it though. Like basebal said, he wouldn't switch them if he's a coin dealer. For him to do that would cause big problems.
