Hi. I was thrilled to find this in change, as I've never found a liberty head beforeThen, I noticed the LI did not seem to be right. It's the only one I've ever met "live, and in person", but pictures I found online didn't look like this. Is this an error/variety?, or is there another reason for this? She's no beauty, but she's beautiful to meThanks for helping to further my education!

The left side of the L appears to be in the right position. I think what you are seeing as the I is just a scratch. These letters were known for being rubbed to the point where the an no longer visible. It was a high point on the design. Like the date on a Buffalo nickel. I think the lower bar of the L and the entire I were rubbed off and what you see are just coincidental scratches.

Oh. I thought the I looked a little thin, and with all the damage, it did cross my mind. Thanks for answering, though. Now I know

Thanks, CoinsKelly, that's why I picked "Happy Apple", cause that's what I felt like doing when I first saw it!

The LIBERTY is incuse on the coin. A contact mark altered the design in that area.

Lovely find for a pocket change coin ... I would as well be pleased to come across this example.

That what you are seeing is damage ... not to mention the significant rim damage visible on the obverse at 12:00.

Lovely circulation find however ..
